[Comic Book Club] The Road to Hickman’s Avengers: Chapter 3

And Happy Super Bowl Sunday to those who celebrate!

Just in case several hours of buff guys in tight-fitting clothes hitting each other impossibly hard isn’t enough, we’re back with our final “pre-reading” for the upcoming read through Hickman’s Avengers AKA The Road to Secret Wars.

Many of you will soon be receiving (if you haven’t already) the long-delayed Avengers Vol. 1 omnibus. If you haven’t ordered yours and you’re hoping to, I’d act quickly. I’m already seeing a lot of places sell out. It looks like OPB still has some available if you’re down with the alternate cover. If not, Amazon also seems to have some in stock. But those are a bit pricier and won’t come in for another 8-10 days.

I say all this to say that it’s almost time to get this thing started. And I know we’ve got some eager beavers in the group who are going to want to get going as soon as they have books in hand. Because I really don’t want anyone to miss out on the fun of the group read, my hope is that those of you inclined to read ahead will put their energy into these final 11 issues.

If you’ve been following along with the preliminary readings, I hope you’ve enjoyed them. If not, don’t stress! You’ve still got time to catch up if you’d like, but as I’ve said before, Hickman’s run works remarkably well on its own. These preliminary readings are purely optional, so don’t feel like you’re falling behind if you haven’t had a chance to check out Chapters 1-2.

That said, if you are going to read any comics before we get going, I’d say these are the ones to read. Where as the first two chapters were offering more in the way of general context, this final batch directly sets up the opening issues of Hickman’s Avengers/New Avengers. You can think of these issues as positioning all the key pieces on the board. That means we’ll get some time with our main two Avengers, the Illuminati, and a few other characters that will prove central to the coming saga.
